Abnormal Bleeding Q & A

What causes abnormal bleeding?

A normal menstrual cycle is usually between 21-35 days and lasts about seven days. If you bleed heavily or your period is longer than seven days, you may need treatment for abnormal bleeding.

There are a number of gynecologic conditions that can cause abnormal uterine bleeding. Dr. Gomes can diagnose and treat causes like:

  • Polyps
  • Fibroids
  • Endometriosis
  • Bleeding disorders
  • Endometrial cancer
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)

If you have an ectopic pregnancy or experience a miscarriage, you may also experience abnormal bleeding. Prevention and treatment will depend on your individual condition.

When should I seek treatment for abnormal bleeding?

Abnormal bleeding is any usual bleeding that you experience outside of your usual menstrual cycle, including spotting or bleeding in between periods and bleeding during sex.

If you have any of these issues, you should schedule a diagnostic evaluation at Women’s Healthcare of Garden City. Dr. Gomes also recommends that postmenopausal women who experience bleeding after their menstrual cycle ends may also need a diagnostic evaluation of their symptoms.

Dr. Gomes offers pelvic exams and on-site ultrasounds to identify the cause of your bleeding. He is also proficient at in-office sonohysterography to evaluate anatomic issues that could be contributing to abnormal bleeding.

How is abnormal bleeding treated?

Your treatment plan for abnormal bleeding depends on its underlying cause. Dr. Gomes works with you to determine how to stop excessive bleeding based on the results of your testing.

Available treatment services for abnormal bleeding includes:

  • Medications
  • Hormone therapy
  • Hysteroscopy
  • Dilation and curettage (DNC)
  • Endometrial polypectomy

Dr. Gomes continues to monitor the results of your treatment to ensure bleeding stops and doesn’t interfere with your ability to become pregnant if you’re still planning your family.
